Although people
have been meditating for thousands of years, in the west meditation
was often viewed as a quaint tradition rather than a powerful force
until the scientific community took notice. Now we know from
numerous studies that the benefits of meditation begin within a
short period of time with regular practice. It has also been
shown that these benefits can be subtle at first and tend to build
over time, so it is best to approach meditation as part of a healthy
lifestyle, rather than a quick fix. Some of the more common
benefits of meditation include an increased ability to focus, solve
problems and handle the stresses of everyday life without being
overwhelmed.
Even the medical community is now in support of meditation as a way
of dealing with many conditions such as high blood pressure, anxiety
and insomnia, to mention just a few. Of course, if you have
a medical condition, you should never consider meditation a substitute
for your doctor's advice. The wisest path is to explore with
your doctor how meditation can support whatever medical care you
are receiving.
